Welcome to the Community!

The English Students Association is a new organization on Grounds that seeks to bring the literature-loving community together socially, artistically, and academically, as we seize our time here at UVA and collaboratively prepare for the future. Through our monthly meetings, our mentorship network, and our many social and academic events, the ESA seeks to foster the already vibrant English community, inspiring and equipping its members to cultivate relationships, build dreams, and bring about new realities at UVA.

The ESA on Grounds

We're structured around main monthly meetings where we bring the English community together and enter dialogues with other groups across Grounds. We start off with snacks and socializing, share department and ESA announcements, and finish with a presentation, group dialogue, or initiative that explores the relevance of literature to contemporary issues. Among our featured student groups are the International Justice Mission, the African American Studies Majors Union, Shakespeare on the Lawn, and One Less.

Outside our monthly meetings, we hold academic and career-related panels, host social events, connect students to various literary CIOs, and run a peer mentorship program.

Mentorship:
Navigating the Major, Peer and Alumni Advising

Should I major in English? What courses should I take?  Will I get a job?? The Mentorship program connects students to one another for course or major advising, and also facilitates connections with English alumni to promote career counseling. Check out the Mentorship page to learn about the opportunities our department offers, and to connect to our wonderful student mentors!

FIRST MAIN MEETING!!

Winter Read: Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Monday, Feb 1st, 6-7:15pm, Bryan Faculty Lounge (202)

Whether or not you read Between the World and Me this break, come hear Professors Levenson, Wallace, and Woolfork share their thoughts on this short but incredibly powerful novel:

"Americans have built an empire on the idea of 'race,' a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men...What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates' attempt to answer these questions..." All are welcome!
